Blissful Blue
This past weekend I took a bus up to Chefchaouen with Katie and Jay. It was such an awesome town hidden away in the gorgeous rolling green hills of the Riff Mountains. The old medina is painted in all shades of blue: cobalt doors, turquoise windows and periwinkle walls. Walking in that magnificent sea of blue felt so magical I almost expected to see smurfs or elves rounding the corners in front of me. Our time was spent lazing about the many cheap cafes and shops and hiking a little in the surrounding hills. The main source of income in the Riff Mountains in the cultivation ofmarijuanaa, which definitely had a "chill" effect on the locals. I think some of the great deals we got in the shops was due to the simple fact that the shop keepers were too stoned to rip us off! I did purchase some quality wool-products made from Chefchaouni sheep from a man whoreferredd to himself at "The Hat Man". He was a jubilant guy, definitely living in a different world than we are. I believe he started singing "Don't Worry Be Happy" as we completed our purchases and was throwing out peace signs left and right. Good times. I definitely wish I had visited sooner so that I could have gone up to Chefchaouen every weekend! In fact we might be going again on Saturday...it is just that addicting!

Some shots of the medina.

Chefchouen was one of my favorite cities too.... did you notice all the hippies hanging around? And the Ksba in the middle of the city? And the women washing their clothes in the river that runs through the city? Speaking of the weed, we saw this guy walking his goat through the streets and petting her, and tellng her stories, and telling her how much he loved the hashish. I love it! You're driving through these beautiful mountains feeling like you're in the middle of nowhere when all of a sudden this gorgeous blue city rises up in front of you ( I agree that periwinkle is a good word for the color of the walls). I wish I was there with you!! If you go again you should stay at the peace hotel, it's owned by a really nice Spanish lady. We saw a lot of cool little 5 dollar hotels full of color and hippies from all over the world. Anyway, enough nostalgia. I hope all is well with you. Can't wait to see you after you get back. Tata.
the pictures are amazing! it must be real luck to find these spots..
